where livestock buyers and sellers meet

Market Reports

As of May 20, 2022

Butcher cows traded barely steady this week to $1 lower. Top cows were $103. Bulls were also barely steady this week on limited selection, as good bulls topped out at $131. Feeder cattle traded all over the board this week as good quality steers and heifers were fully steady with good demand. Any cattle that were fleshy, plainer, late castrated, or horned were discounted quite heavily.  Grass weight cattle that are fully weaned and carrying light flesh out sell fall calves with extra flesh by as much as $20 cwt. Producers must be wary not to throw too much feed at calves that are still nursing. Nothing stings more than pouring expensive feed into their calves only to get discounted heavily on fat grass weight cattle. From our sheep and goat sale on Wednesday May 18th we saw lambs trade sharply lower on all classes. This drop echoed what was going on in the Eastern markets as well.
***Any producers that experienced higher than normal mortality rates through our spring storms are asked to contact the Manitoba Beef Producers so they can get an estimate on death loss, so they can assess the situation and possibly lobby for government assistance.

***WE REMIND PRODUCERS THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL NEW REGULATIONS ON SAFE AND HUMANE TRANSPORTATION OF ANIMALS TO BE AWARE OF.  CULL COWS WITH PEAK LACTATION AND LARGE UDDERS ARE CONSIDERED COMPROMISED UNDER THESE NEW RULES. ALSO ANY ANIMALS THAT ARE LAME, BLIND, CARRYING RUPTURES ARE ALSO CONSIDERED COMPROMISED. SUCH ANIMALS WILL B TO FINES IF DETECTED BY CFIA AT ALL AUCTION MARKETS.
Please see the following regulations to know what is permitted.
